Last month I brought to your attention the closely timed deaths of two great singers, one from the Balkans and the other internationally renowned.

Today, another fine and successful singer has died. But not someone over seventy or eighty from old age or illness. It was 26 year-old Macedonian singer Toše Proeski, and he died in a God-damn car crash on the Zagreb-Lipovac highway near Nova Gradiška. According to reports, he was sitting in the front passenger seat sleeping and died on impact. What a fucking tragedy. I really am sad about it.

What a loss for his family, Macedonia and all of the former Yugoslavia.

How young, and yet we say laka mu crna zemlja bila.
